The Rokinon 85mm f1.4 Aspherical on the Sony A7

My oldest son just got his first pair of glasses, and I figured it would be a great opportunity to do a little "studio" session. It's also a perfect opportunity to test out my Rokinon 85mm f1.4 on the A7. It's a bit of a generic looking portrait, but for what it is, I'm quite happy with the end result!

If anyone is interested, here's the lighting setup & equipment I used:

I used 2 Yongnuo speedlights. 1 in the umbrella & the other directly behind my son pointing backwards onto the back drop:

Triggered using these inexpensive Cowboy Studio wireless triggers:

An umbrella softbox at about a 45 degree angle on the right:

A silver reflector on the left:

And an old black fleece blanket for the backdrop. I've found that black fleece turns into a nice gray when lit with a speedlight.

Canon FD 55mm f1.2 SCC on the A7

The Sony A7 & Canon FD 55mm f1.2 SCC are a wonderful combination. It's too bad this lens is so heavy! The image quality is great, but the combination feels very unbalanced.

I've been itching to put the Samyang 14mm on the A7 to the test. A recent trip to Phoenix scratched that itch for me!

A Flickr Photo Book Review

As a gift to my wife this year for Christmas, I decided to collect my favorite photos of our family over the course of the year, and assemble them into a photo book. Here are some thoughts on my experience using Flickr.

After the ice storm

While the rest of Michigan is in complete winter chaos, this little spot on the Grand River was eerily calm & peaceful.

A day at the beach

Over the weekend, we drove over to Holland, MI to check out the ice on Lake Michigan. This specific pier & beach is much more enjoyable in August.

All photos were taken with my Sony RX1. The 2nd & 3rd photos were taken using a .75x wide angle conversion lens. More on that later :)

To EVF or not to EVF - A Review of the Sony RX1 EVF, the FDA-EV1MK

Just recently,  I wrote an article reflecting on my use of the Sony RX1 over the course of 2013. I mentioned in that article that I did not own the EVF for the RX1, and wasn't sure that I could really justify purchasing it. In response to that statement, a friend lent me his EVF (which he uses on an RX100 mkII) to try out for a week or so. Here are my impressions & conclusions...
